Pirates News · Looking Back Fifty Years

In honor of the Lumberton Pirate Football banquet this week, let’s take a look back to 1968.

Coaching Staff in 1968:
Head Coach: Tunney Brooks
Line Coach: Finley Read
Assistant Coach: Webster Conner

Conference: Southeastern 3A

The pre-season annual Blue-White Scrimmage was held on a Saturday with proceeds going to help complete the field house before the first home season game.

The first game held was against Seventy-First 9/1/1968

Had a 28-0 shutout win against Dunn.

The toughest team played was the Rockingham Rockets. The Pirates played them in 1968 for the 24th time and lost to them for the 20th time. The team walked in at the Rocket’s stadium with high hopes of winning. Unfortunately, the Pirates lost 14-13. The loss against the Rockets and a tie against Scotland cost the Pirates a shot at the state playoffs.

Season record:
7-2-1 Overall
4-2-1 Conference

The seniors were honored at the final home game of the season which was played against the Hamlet Rams.
