Multiple Teams · Missing Spring Sports Affects Many

Spring sports being postponed, and possibly canceled, has affected more student-athletes than most realize. Sports in the spring include baseball, softball, girls soccer, track and field, boys golf and boys tennis.

Track and field is a sport that a lot of athletes choose as a third sport and includes many events including (field events) high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, shot put, (track events) 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1600 meters, 3200 meters, hurdles, and relay (4×100, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800). With so many events, track and field keeps a lot of athletes active in the spring.

After several years of not being able to offer a track and field meet at home, the Pirates were scheduled to host a meet this year. Fans and athletes were really looking forward to that.

Many memories are made during that last season of play for seniors with their teammates, who have become family over the past few years. They have senior nights to celebrate and deserve to experience that “last time playing together” feeling. There are some seniors looking forward to the opportunity to set and/or break records.

We hope all of the athletes are staying positive and continuing to work on skills and staying active. That will be important if spring sports do resume.

The NCHSAA commissioner remains hopeful that sports can be resumed for the spring. Click here to read more.
